We continue our 79th season with the highly entertaining comedy Lost in Yonkers by Neil Simon. In 1991 it won the Drama Desk Award for Best New Play, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the Tony Award for Best Play. The show is set in the 1940’s. Grandma, the family matriarch, is the owner of a candy and ice cream store. She and her daughter, Bella, live in an apartment above the store. Grandma’s son, Eddie, has gotten involved with a loan shark, and in order to pay off the debt, needs to go “south” and take a job. His dilemma is what to do with his two teenaged sons, Jay and Arty. Since Grandma is rather demanding and difficult to get along with, he approaches her with a little trepidation when asking her to take care of them while he is gone. Bella, who lives in a world of child-like innocence, wants the boys to stay, and after they move in, she shares secrets with them, which eventually end up in a “family meeting.” The other siblings are Louie, a small-time gangster, and Gert, a woman with “breathing problems.” Simon creates scenes that are both touching and hilarious, and we are sure you will enjoy meeting these rather eccentric characters. All of the men in the show are first-timers on the BCT stage.

With Mike Fallon’s help, new board member, Mary Easland, has discovered a new love in her life....power tools! BCT is always looking for new recruits to help build the sets for our productions. Previous experience is not necessary, but of course master craftsmen can show up any time and will be welcomed!
Joyce Anderson works on a sign that will appear in the upcoming show.
A reminder that the Henry Avenue bridge is closed for repairs this season. To get to the high school from the north on Riverside Drive (Highway 51) you will need to continue south a bit further and cross the river using the bridge at White Avenue/Portland Avenue.
We have just completed the organization of our archives. We
have sorted through boxes of old programs, scrapbooks and photos and have compiled
a list of all of the Beloit Civic Theatre productions since we were founded
in 1932!

For many of the shows listed we have an original playbill in the office files. We
have also framed and hung many of the duplicates on the walls in our office.

MEET OUR NEWEST BOARD MEMBERS:

Patricia has directed Greetings, Arsenic and Old Lace, Over the River and Through the Woods and Deathtrap for BCT. Patricia's other recent work has been with Lakeland Players in Elkhorn, where she has directed Come Blow Your Horn, Bus Stop and the Wisconsin Premiere of The Tomorrow Box, to name a few. Her directing career, however, began in Chicago at the professional level. A few highlights include the Chicago premiere of William Inge's A Loss of Roses, which was included on the Sun-Times recommended list and Wrong Turn at Lungfish, which received a Jeff Award Nomination. While in Chicago, Patricia was an adjunct professor of theatre at Concordia University in River Forest IL. Patricia received her B.A. in Voice/Drama from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and her M.A. in Theatre from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Patricia lives in Sharon with her husband, Patrick, and two dogs.Welcome to the BCT Board of Directors!

We also welcome Mary Easland as a new board member. You'll find Mary on the 1980 cast list of Beloit Civic's summer dinner theatre production of "Cocktails With Mimi". This time around at BCT, Mary's having a lot of fun learning some set-building skills from the very patient and understanding members of the organization. She
was a student of Loren Sass at both Lincoln Junior High and Beloit Memorial High School. Mary is currently employed by the City of Janesville. She is proud to be widely known as Katie Culbertson's mom!
AIR CONDITIONING:
For all of you who have suffered over the years with the unbearable temperatures
in our theatre, please be assured that we feel your pain – especially
those of us who have acted under the blazing hot stage lighting. In the past
few years, BCT has installed ceiling fans, and cut holes in the lobby doors
and installed air louvers to improve ventilation. What we really need is an
improvement in the air handling devices and the installation of air conditioning
in the theatre. To achieve this goal we are setting up a separate savings account
and initiating a fund raising drive to meet our goal. Any contributions can
be mailed to the BCT office at 400 East Grand Avenue #310. All donations are
fully tax deductible.
